What is Arthritis?
It is an extremely common condition that inflicts joint damage. It is the #1 cause of disability in the United States surpassing both heart disease and diabetes.
Who does it effect?
There is a strong misconception that arthritis only effects older demographics which is not entirely accurate. It is true that some forms of it are more likely to appear as we age, however it is not itself a disease of aging. Rather, it can appear across a large age range. In 2025, over 3% of young adults aged 18 to 34 already had a diagnosed form of arthritis.
How many kinds are there?
There are over 100 different kinds of arthritis. Each with their own causes and symptoms. Since it is specific to the patient, getting proper diagnosis is key to effective treatment.
Symptoms such as swelling, stiffness, and pain can change over time. While there is no definitive cure for this condition, doctors can often help treat or manage symptoms using a variety of methods including over the counter medication, simple lifestyle changes, or (in severe cases) sometimes surgery.
What now?
As with many disease states, a strong support network can be beneficial in managing a patient’s condition. There are a wide variety of organizations who are able to assist newly diagnosed individuals and their families with first steps in managing their disease.
